Moving a wardrobe: empty, measure and assess dismantling
Large or flat-pack wardrobes may twist or be too awkward to move assembled. A smaller solid cabinet may have different needs. Empty the unit, check its construction and access and agree the handling method before moving day.
Check stability and dimensions
Record height, width, depth and relevant turning dimensions. Check doors, stairs and lifts. Large flat-pack units and furniture with mirrors or glass need particular care; do not assume a unit is safe to move whole because it fits the van.
Remove contents and suitable loose parts
Empty shelves, baskets and drawers. Remove and protect loose shelves and glass where the design allows. Photograph the assembled unit and keep screws and fittings in labelled bags belonging to that item.
Check wall or ceiling attachments
Anti-tip brackets and other fixings must be dealt with appropriately before movement. Agree who removes and reinstalls them. Check any obligations for holes or restoration at the old property rather than pulling the unit away from the wall.
Agree dismantling and reassembly
Use the manufacturer’s method where available. Protect panels, corners and finishes and avoid straining connections. Record the number of units and requested assembly work in the offer; it adds tasks beyond simple carrying.
Prepare the destination
Check the final room and access before reassembly. Restore appropriate anti-tip protection under the manufacturer’s instructions, and do not leave loose mirrored or glass components unprotected among other loads.
Frequently asked questions
Can a flat-pack wardrobe move assembled?
It may twist or be damaged. Have construction, stability and access assessed and dismantle appropriately where needed.
What about mirrored doors?
Use a method suited to the design and protect glass components appropriately; ask about specialist packaging where necessary.
Can the company take it apart?
Ask explicitly and have dismantling and reassembly included in the agreed scope.
Should I measure its height?
Yes, along with width, depth and the turning route. Tilting changes the space required.
