How to assemble moving boxes securely
A box needs a correctly assembled base before it is filled. Designs differ, so follow the box’s folds and instructions, then check its condition and reinforce where appropriate.
Fold and secure the base
Open the box and turn the base upwards. On a conventional flap design, fold the short flaps before the long ones. Tape the centre seam and across the edges in an H pattern for reinforcement. Turn it upright and check that the base is seated. Interlocking designs should be assembled according to their own instructions.
Inspect reused boxes
Look for moisture damage, soft corners and tears. Dry, stable used boxes can work, but weaker ones should carry only light belongings. Check and retape the base where needed.
Carry and stack with care
Support a box from underneath rather than lifting open flaps. Avoid placing heavy boxes on light or vulnerable loads. A strong base does not make an excessively heavy box safe to carry.
Frequently asked questions
Is folding enough without tape?
Do not rely on an unsecured base for heavy contents. Follow the box design and reinforce appropriately.
Can I reuse moving boxes?
Yes, if they are dry, stable and undamaged. Inspect the base and corners first.
What tape should I use?
Use strong wide packing tape. Thin office tape is not intended to hold a loaded moving box.
