Choosing a moving van size: measure the load and the vehicle

The right vehicle depends on the actual furniture and boxes. Compare the load with the vehicle’s internal dimensions and usable volume, and check weight limits separately. A larger van is useful only if it is suitable for the route and driver.

List and measure the largest belongings

Record length, width and height of sofas, wardrobes, beds and tables, plus a box estimate. Note which items can be safely dismantled and any separate specialist handling, such as a piano.

Check dimensions, not just cubic metres

Ask about internal length, width, height, door opening and obstructions. A tall cabinet or long sofa may not fit a space whose total volume sounds sufficient. Leave room for protection, restraint and a workable load layout.

Check vehicle and driver limits

Confirm the authorised vehicle weight, payload and driving-licence requirements with the hire supplier. Ask about included restraints, blankets and loading equipment. Do not treat empty volume as permission to add weight.

Compare a larger vehicle with more trips

An extra trip takes driving and handling time, especially over a longer route or within a limited hire period. Compare actual vehicle options and access rather than assuming the cheapest small van creates the lowest complete cost.

Let the moving company assess its vehicle

With a company arrangement, provide a precise inventory and access description so it can choose suitable equipment. Your own estimate is useful context, not a requirement to specify the company’s truck. Ask about load protection and keep furniture orientation appropriate to the item.

Frequently asked questions

Is cubic capacity enough to choose a van?

No. Check the separate dimensions, openings, payload and suitability for the largest items.

What if it is too small?

You may need another trip or a different vehicle, changing time and cost. Check early.

Which driving licence is needed?

Confirm the requirements for the exact vehicle and your own licence with the supplier before booking.

Can everything be laid flat to fit more?

No. Some items need upright or specifically supported transport. Plan for suitable handling, not the tightest theoretical packing.
