Moving van capacity: understand cubic metres and usable space
Moving vehicles have different capacities. Cubic metres describe volume, not a promise that any collection of furniture will fit. Use the actual dimensions and the load’s shape, with separate checks on payload and restraint.
Calculate volume in metres
Length × width × height gives the volume of a rectangular space. For example, 4 × 2 × 2 metres is 16 cubic metres. Wheel arches, sloping walls and installed equipment reduce usable space.
Estimate the belongings
Measure large furniture and estimate boxes. A box measuring 60 × 40 × 40 cm occupies 0.096 cubic metres, approximately 0.1. Those are example dimensions, not a universal moving-box size.
Illustrative load volumes
Furniture shapes and dismantling change real space needs, so measure your own items.
| Example | Approximate illustrative volume |
|---|---|
| 10 boxes of about 60 × 40 × 40 cm | About 1 m³ |
| Three-seat sofa | About 2–3 m³ |
| Double bed with mattress | About 1–2 m³ |
| Table and four chairs | About 1–2 m³ |
Allow for gaps and protection
Irregular furniture, wrapping and restraint prevent perfect packing. Leave room for gaps, protection and securing the load; difficult shapes may need a different vehicle or loading plan. Two vans with equal stated volume can have different useful height or length.
Compare the result with real options
If an estimate approaches capacity, review the load, vehicle or number of trips before booking. Do not ignore weight limits because the volume appears to fit.
A precise volume is not required to request help
A furniture list, box estimate and access description give the company a useful basis for assessment. Use van-size planning for the practical choice and the quote-preparation guide for the wider job.
Frequently asked questions
How many cubic metres does a flat contain?
It varies with belongings. Measure the actual load rather than relying only on property size.
How much space does a moving box use?
Multiply its external transport dimensions in metres. A 60 × 40 × 40 cm example is about 0.1 m³.
Must I give a volume when requesting quotes?
No. It can help, but a clear inventory and box estimate are useful starting points.
Why is the theoretical total not always usable?
Shapes, openings, obstructions, protective materials and safe restraint affect how the load can be arranged.
