End-of-tenancy cleaning: a room-by-room checklist

Clean after the home is empty so cupboards, corners and floors are accessible. Work from top to bottom in each room and check your lease for the agreed handover condition.

Kitchen

Defrost and wash the fridge and freezer, leaving doors open as appropriate. Clean the oven, trays, cooker hood and filter; cupboards and drawers inside and out; tiles, sink and taps.

Bathroom

Descale and clean the toilet, basin and shower. Check tiles and grout, clear drains, and clean mirrors, cupboards and the ventilation grille. Use methods suited to the materials rather than damaging a surface with an unsuitable product.

Every room and storage area

Dust skirting boards, doors, frames and switches; clean internal windows, sills and radiators; vacuum and wash suitable floors. Include storage, the balcony and any cellar room that forms part of the handover.

Before returning the keys

Walk through in daylight and photograph the rooms. Cleaning is one part of the handover, not a guarantee about the inspection outcome or deposit. If time is tight, obtain a clear quote for professional cleaning and confirm which tasks it covers.
