Large moving boxes: keep bulky contents light
Large boxes suit light belongings that occupy a lot of space: bedding, pillows, soft toys and folded clothes. They are not an invitation to pack a larger load of books or tools.
Choose light contents
Duvets, blankets, clothing, soft toys and lightweight decorations can use large boxes. A lampshade needs its own protection and no crushing load. Keep dense books, papers, tools and large quantities of china in smaller suitable loads.
Fill, protect and close
Use light fill so the lid does not sink under a stack. Put the heavier part of a light load at the bottom and cushion vulnerable items. If the box is overfull, repack it rather than leaving it open or forcing the lid down. Tape and label it clearly.
Illustrative quantities
The amount of bedding and clothing matters more than the household label. Count your own belongings.
| Household example | Illustrative large-box count | Possible contents |
|---|---|---|
| One person | 3–5 | Bedding, pillows and clothes |
| Couple | 5–8 | More bedding and lightweight items |
| Family with children | 8–12 | Extra toys and children’s clothing |
Check before carrying
Make sure the box is securely assembled, full enough to retain shape, not excessively heavy and marked on more than one side. Do not stack heavy loads on a vulnerable box. Strong bin bags may tear and are harder to stack, so consider their limitations for bedding.
Allow space in the vehicle
Light does not mean compact. Large boxes consume van volume and need a secure loading arrangement. Let the company plan the load, or check vehicle capacity and load restraints if moving yourself. Our van-size guide explains the separate space question.
Frequently asked questions
How many large boxes do I need?
Count light bulky belongings such as bedding and clothes. You may need fewer large boxes than small ones.
Can I use bags instead?
For some bedding they may work, but bags can tear and are harder to stack securely.
Can a large box stay half empty?
Avoid unsupported space: use light fill or a better-sized box so it retains shape.
How should I label it?
Write destination room and contents on at least two visible surfaces.
