Moving artwork: document, protect and agree specialist needs
Artwork can be vulnerable to pressure, impact, moisture and unsuitable surface contact. Record its condition before moving and agree protection appropriate to the work rather than treating every piece as an ordinary framed picture.
Make a condition record
Photograph each work and keep receipts, certificates or valuations separately where available. Record dimensions and existing damage so the transport plan and insurance discussion use clear information.
Match packaging to the medium
Frames and glass need protected corners and suitable rigid support. Painted surfaces should not have bubble wrap pressing against them; the appropriate non-marking surface layer depends on the work. Sculpture and ceramics need individual support and cushioning. Valuable or vulnerable work may require specialist packaging.
Plan position and the waiting environment
Avoid heavy loads pressing on framed works and agree supported transport, commonly upright where suitable. Keep works away from direct sun, damp and large temperature changes while waiting or in storage.
Check cover with both parties
Tell the moving company about the pieces and any particular value or fragility, and ask your insurer about transport and storage cover. Do not assume ordinary contents insurance settles every artwork.
Request specialist assessment when needed
A large collection, unusual object or valuable antique work may need a particular handling or environmental plan. The picture and mirror guide covers more ordinary framed items, but is not conservation advice.
Frequently asked questions
Can bubble wrap touch a painting?
Avoid direct pressure or contact with vulnerable painted surfaces. Ask about a suitable protective method for the medium.
How should a large mirror be prepared?
Use suitable corner and rigid protection and an agreed transport position. Read the separate picture-and-mirror guide.
Does my contents policy cover art in transit?
Check the actual policy and any value limits or requirements with the insurer before moving.
Should I carry valuable art myself?
Small items may be appropriate to retain yourself, but that does not replace a suitable packaging and insurance plan. Specialist work may need specialist transport.
