Moving blankets: wrap furniture and keep protection in place
Moving blankets are padded protective covers for handling and transport. They help separate surfaces and soften knocks, but the right wrapping and loading plan still depends on the item. Cover exposed corners and edges and secure the protection without taping directly to furniture.
Prepare, wrap and retain
Empty the item and remove appropriate loose shelves or glass parts. Position suitable protection around it, including edges, and retain it with a safe wrapping or strap arrangement. Keep it protected through the carrying route and remove the blanket when it is no longer needed.
Different materials do different jobs
They may be combined, but none should be treated as universal protection.
| Material | Main purpose | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Moving blanket | Surface separation and cushioning | Needs to cover and remain on the item |
| Stretch wrap | Retaining protection and reducing dust | Very little impact cushioning |
| Bubble wrap | Cushioning suitable smaller items | May mark delicate finishes without a suitable layer |
| Cardboard | Rigid separation and corner protection | Not a complete packaging plan on its own |
Check the items and the route
Wood, lacquer, appliances and vulnerable surfaces need protection from rubbing. Glass and mirrors need suitable additional rigid protection. Ordinary towels or blankets may work for some smaller items but provide less consistent coverage than purpose-made moving materials.
Borrow, hire or arrange through the company
Some movers include blankets in their equipment. If moving yourself, ask the van supplier about hire, quantities and return conditions. Do not assume a single blanket covers every large item; plan enough coverage for the actual furniture.
Keep protection useful until the end
Avoid too few blankets, adhesive against finishes or removing protection while other furniture is still being carried past. Return hired materials under the supplier’s terms and clean owned materials according to their care instructions before reuse.
