Moving heavy furniture: plan access and lifting requirements

Heavy furniture needs planning before moving day. Measure doors, stairs and lifts, note the item’s size and approximate weight, and tell the company early so it can assess staffing and equipment.

Measure the complete route

Check door and entrance height and width, stair turns and landings, lift dimensions and capacity, and carrying distance from vehicle to door. Repeat the checks at the destination.

Describe each large or particular item

Record dimensions, material and approximate weight for items such as a sofa, wardrobe, piano or safe. Photographs can help the company assess the job. Consider whether an item can be dismantled and agree who will do it.

A safe needs its own weight, fixing and access assessment. Do not treat it as an ordinary cabinet or assume that the same handling plan applies.

Make safety part of the plan

Do not attempt a particularly heavy lift alone. Ask suitably equipped professionals to assess heavy or valuable items, and keep routes clear on the day. A general moving offer does not automatically confirm that a company can handle every specialist item.

Frequently asked questions

What information should I give about heavy furniture?

Dimensions, approximate weight, material and access at both ends. Photographs can make the description clearer.

Can every company move a piano?

Not necessarily. State the instrument or other specialist item explicitly and ask the company to confirm capability.

Should furniture be dismantled?

It may make handling easier. Agree what can be dismantled and who is responsible for the work.
