Comparing moving box deals: look beyond the unit price
A box deal is useful only if the boxes suit what you are packing. Compare quality, dimensions, pack size, materials, delivery and returns rather than the price per box alone. This is a guide to box offers, not a quotation for the move itself.
Compare like with like
Check single- or double-wall cardboard, internal measurements, quantities and whether additional boxes can be bought individually. Confirm included tape, paper or cushioning, delivery to the door or entrance, and any return conditions for unused undamaged boxes.
Explain what you want supplied
Give an estimate by size, the delivery address and timing, any wrapping needed and whether unused-box returns matter. Ask about minimum orders and whether the delivery time is a fixed day or a wider window.
A hypothetical comparison
A lower unit price can be offset by an oversized fixed pack, materials and delivery charges.
| Item | Example offer A | Example offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Unit price | Lower | Slightly higher |
| Pack size | Fixed pack of 20 | 15, adjustable quantity |
| Materials | Separate | Tape and paper included |
| Delivery | Extra charge | Included |
| Unused returns | Not offered | Within an agreed period |
Add the complete costs
Calculate the boxes you will actually use, materials and delivery together. A mixed pack may fit a whole home better than identical boxes, but only if its sizes match your contents. Check internal dimensions and the quantity estimate.
Confirm delivery and return terms
Check whether boxes are carried to the flat or left at an entrance, what happens if the delivery date changes and whether any free-delivery minimum applies. Keep the agreement in writing before relying on the boxes for a fixed packing date.
If boxes and moving are sold together
You can ask whether materials can be part of the moving quote and record them in the moving budget. Still assess box quality and the moving service separately: a good box price does not establish the quality or scope of the move.
Frequently asked questions
Is a bulk order always cheaper overall?
Only if the quantity and sizes are useful. A lower unit price may not compensate for unused boxes and delivery costs.
What does double-wall cardboard mean?
It has two corrugated layers and generally provides more rigidity for demanding contents and stacking.
Can I return unused boxes?
That depends on the seller’s conditions and deadlines. Check before ordering.
Are boxes included in a moving quote?
Not always. Ask the company and have the quantities and costs recorded.
