How many moving boxes do I need? Count the contents
The best estimate starts with cupboards, drawers and shelves, not a fixed number per square metre. Two homes of the same size can have very different quantities of books, kitchenware and stored belongings.
Use a room-by-room test
Declutter first. Count shelving and storage, pack a representative shelf as a test and use the result to estimate similar contents. Repeat for kitchen cupboards and wardrobes, keeping box sizes and weight in mind. Leave some spare capacity for contents you discover later, then adjust the number as you pack rather than treating a fixed percentage as a requirement.
A room example, not a formula
These broad examples illustrate the method. Your actual contents and box sizes may produce very different results.
| Room | Example contents | Illustrative boxes |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | China, pans, tins, small appliances | 8–12 |
| Living room | Books, ornaments, electronics | 5–8 |
| Bedroom | Clothes, bedding, shoes | 4–6 |
| Bathroom | Toiletries and towels | 2–3 |
Count spaces that are easy to miss
Include cellar, loft, separate storage, under-bed drawers, bathroom cupboards, balcony, shed and hallway. Treat a substantial storage space as its own inventory section rather than hiding it in a bedroom estimate.
Adjust the estimate as you pack
Start with a room you understand well and update the rest from that experience. If one size runs short, consider redistributing light contents into an appropriate larger box rather than overloading the remaining small boxes.
Use the result for buying and quotes
Record the total by size and describe furniture separately. The inventory guide and cost-estimation guide help connect the box count with the rest of the move. Compare ordering terms, delivery and returns using the box deals guide.
Deal with unused boxes sensibly
Return unused, undamaged boxes if the seller permits it, keep suitable boxes for later use or pass them on. Check the return period before relying on that option.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a reliable boxes-per-square-metre rule?
No single rule captures the contents of different homes. Count storage and test-pack a representative part.
What if I order too few?
You may have to find more at the last minute. A modest buffer can make packing easier.
Does this count include furniture?
No. Record furniture separately; box estimates cover smaller belongings.
Will an inventory help?
Yes. It keeps furniture, special items and box quantities together for the enquiry.
