Moving day checklist: from the first box to the last key
On moving day, keep access clear, carry essentials separately and know where things should go at the destination. This checklist covers the day itself; use the full moving checklist for the weeks before and after.
Before the movers arrive
Use the morning to clear the route and gather what you will carry yourself.
- Keep entrances, lifts and agreed parking accessible.
- Take keys, ID, documents, medication and chargers in a personal bag.
- Empty the fridge and use a cool bag for food travelling with you.
- Finish agreed dismantling of lamps or shelving safely.
While belongings are being moved
Be available for questions and show what is fragile or not coming. Put room labels on doors at the destination. Check storage rooms and the cellar, and keep water and food available for yourself and anyone helping.
Before leaving the old home
Walk through every room and check cupboards, drawers, storage, balcony and relevant shared areas. Read and photograph meters where appropriate, close windows, switch off lights and appliances, and return keys as agreed.
At the new address
Check and document existing damage before furniture is placed. Set up beds and unpack the first-night essentials. Complete address registration if you have not already done so, and check the official guidance for your circumstances.
