Packing for moving: a practical room-by-room plan
Start early, finish one room at a time and label every box with its contents and destination room. Pack things you rarely use first and everyday essentials last. Our practical moving questions also cover boxes, weight and access.
Assemble the box before filling it
Follow the existing folds and fully engage the base flaps. Reinforce the base with packing tape where appropriate. Never lift a box by its open top flaps.
- Use smaller loads for books and other heavy contents.
- Check the box dimensions before planning stacks.
- Keep box weight manageable and label the destination room.
Make a packing order
Walk through the home and decide what to sell, give away or discard. Anything removed now does not need packing, carrying or unpacking. Start with storage spaces, books and ornaments; leave kitchen essentials, toiletries and bedding until later.
Gather boxes, tape, markers and packing paper. Finish one room before starting the next, and set a realistic daily target, such as a couple of boxes in the evening.
Balance weight and fill empty space
Put heavy items at the bottom and lighter ones above. Use small boxes for dense contents and large boxes for light things. Fill gaps with towels, clothing or paper so items cannot move and the box remains stackable. Close the base securely and keep the load safe to lift.
Wrap fragile items individually
Protect glasses, china and lamps separately with packing paper or suitable cushioning. Pack plates upright, and use dividers for glasses where available. Mark Fragile and This way up on several sides.
For televisions, computers and cables, use the electronics packing checklist before disconnecting anything. Keep backups and the first-use equipment separate from the general load.
Make unpacking easy
Write the room and a short contents description on the lid and at least one side. A room colour or number can also be placed on the new home’s door. Keep a first-night box with bedding, toiletries, chargers, medication and basic refreshments with you.
