Using a lift for moving: dimensions and building rules

A building having a lift does not mean all the furniture will fit. Check the cabin, doorway and permitted use, then describe what can travel in it and what may need another route.

Ask the building contact

Check internal dimensions, door opening, capacity, whether a reservation or hold function is permitted, required protection and any restricted moving hours. Ask the caretaker, landlord or owners’ association rather than changing the lift controls yourself.

Measure larger furniture

Compare sofas, wardrobes and beds with the route into and out of the lift. Tell the moving company if an item may need dismantling or stairs. Include the access to the lift, not only the cabin.

Describe lifts at both ends

Give the same information for collection and delivery. A small lift or repeated trips may not save as much time as expected. Accurate dimensions help companies prepare a realistic offer.

Frequently asked questions

Does a lift always make moving faster?

Not always. Size, access and furniture that still needs stairs can limit the benefit.

Who should I ask about lift use?

The caretaker, landlord or relevant building association.

Should both lifts be described in the enquiry?

Yes. Give availability and useful dimensions at both addresses.
