Packing materials for moving: what to prepare

Prepare sturdy boxes, suitable wrapping and protection before packing. The right amount depends on your belongings: walk through each room and identify fragile surfaces, awkward shapes and items needing particular care.

Build a practical packing kit

Use boxes in suitable sizes, clean packing paper, bubble wrap for vulnerable items, strong wide tape and markers. A tape dispenser can help. Stretch wrap can hold suitable drawers or doors closed and keep upholstery clean, but does not replace impact protection.

Protect furniture and the carrying route

Blankets protect furniture surfaces and cardboard corner guards help with tables and frames. Consider floor and door-frame protection along busy routes. Keep protection secure without attaching adhesive directly to delicate finishes.

Plan quantities and avoid buying twice

Estimate paper and tape room by room and leave a margin. Ask whether the moving company provides boxes, blankets, wrapping or other materials and which costs are included.

Match materials to vulnerable surfaces

Newspaper ink can transfer to light china, so unprinted paper is preferable for delicate items. Combine surface protection and cushioning where needed. Read the paper and bubble-wrap comparison before wrapping fine finishes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wrap items in newspaper?

It can be used, but ink may mark surfaces. Clean unprinted paper is a safer choice for delicate or light-coloured belongings.

Do I need stretch wrap?

It can be useful for suitable furniture, but not every move needs it and it is not a substitute for cushioning.

Will movers bring materials?

It varies. Ask which boxes, blankets or wrapping are included and what you need to supply.
