Antique furniture movers: condition, handling and protection

An antique may have fragile joints, fine veneer, delicate polish or original fittings that are difficult to replace. Preparation should preserve its condition, not simply get it through a doorway as quickly as possible.

Document and measure first

Photograph the piece from several angles, including existing wear or damage. Retain available valuations or insurance records and measure the piece against doors and turns. Identify loose glass, marble, shelves, keys and fittings.

Choose protection for the finish

Use appropriate soft protection and corner guards, with retaining wrap outside a suitable protective layer rather than directly on the surface. Avoid adhesive against wood, polish, lacquer or fabric. Check suitability for the individual material.

Agree how parts and weight are supported

Do not lift by vulnerable arms, carved legs or decorative trim. Have the construction assessed and protect removable parts separately. A modern flat-pack dismantling method should not be assumed to suit old glued joints.

Control transport and storage conditions

Avoid prolonged damp, heat, cold or direct sunlight. Where storage is needed, discuss a suitable stable environment rather than assuming an unheated shed or cellar is acceptable.

Explain the particular requirements

Tell companies the dimensions, known weight, access, fragile parts and that the item is antique or valuable. Ask about relevant handling experience, packaging and insurance with both the company and your insurer.

Frequently asked questions

Can tape be used on antique finishes?

Avoid direct adhesive contact. It can leave residue or remove delicate surface treatments.

Should I identify antiques in the enquiry?

Yes. The company needs to assess materials, handling, time and appropriate protection.

Are antiques automatically covered during moving?

No assumption should be made. Confirm the actual insurance terms and requirements.

Can antiques go into temporary storage?

They may need suitable dry, stable conditions. Discuss the item and duration with an appropriate provider.
