Moving between rental homes: coordinate two handovers

Two calendars need to fit: leaving the old tenancy and taking over the new one. Record notice, key dates, moving, cleaning and inspections together so you can see any overlap or gap before booking the move.

Check both sets of dates

Read the old notice terms and new takeover agreement. Confirm inspection and key-return dates in writing with the relevant landlords or administrators. Do not assume a provisional date is confirmed.

Document the new home

Inspect when you receive access, photograph rooms and record defects. Follow the relevant contractual and legal reporting requirements and retain your communications. This protects the starting-condition record for later reference.

Prepare the old home for handover

Empty the home, clean and clarify any restoration responsibilities. Attend the inspection where possible, record what is noted and keep evidence of keys returned and relevant meter readings. Check post and address arrangements too.

Balance overlap and the budget

A short overlap may give time to move and clean, but it has costs. Without one, sequence tasks realistically and assess any storage requirement. Clean after the load has left rather than working around packed furniture.

Keep deposit questions separate

Read the deposit guide and your lease. Settlement and any dispute depend on the circumstances; this page does not provide universal deadlines or individual legal advice. Seek appropriate tenancy guidance if needed.

Use help where it reduces the pressure

When two inspections, cleaning and transport fall close together, defined moving help can leave time for documentation and administration. Give companies the confirmed access windows rather than only a preferred moving date.

Official sources and further checks

Rules and requirements can depend on your circumstances. Use the relevant official source rather than treating a general moving guide as individual legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

How much overlap should I arrange?

It depends on costs and tasks. Even a small workable overlap may ease moving and cleaning, but check the actual agreements.

Where are the notice rules?

Start with your lease and current rules for the tenancy. The notice guide provides general preparation points.

Should I photograph the new property?

Yes. A starting-condition record is useful if questions arise later.

Is this legal advice about rental disputes?

No. Seek an appropriate tenants’ organisation, adviser or relevant official body for a specific dispute.
