Packing clothes for moving: bags, boxes and hanging items
Sort clothes before packing and start with items out of season. Use suitcases and bags that are moving anyway, and keep clothes for the first few days in a separate personal bag.
Pack in a useful order
Set aside items for reuse, pack seasonal clothing first and everyday clothing last. Label boxes by person and contents. Hanging clothes may travel in a suitable wardrobe box or protective bag while staying on their hangers.
Use textiles carefully as cushioning
Towels and ordinary jumpers can fill gaps around other belongings. Keep fine clothing away from items that may leak colour or soil it. Make sure the textiles are clean and dry.
Ask about wardrobe boxes and drawers
Some companies can supply tall wardrobe boxes with hanging rails. Ask whether they are included, hired or charged separately. Check before leaving clothes in drawers: added weight may damage the furniture or make handling unsafe.
Frequently asked questions
Can clothes remain in drawers?
It depends on the furniture and the mover. Heavy drawers may damage it, so agree the plan beforehand.
What is a wardrobe box?

When should I pack clothing?
