Packing electronics for moving: screens, cables and data

Back up important files, photograph cable connections and use original packaging or suitable protective materials. Screens need protection from pressure, and transport arrangements should follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Prepare before disconnecting

Back up computers and important files. Photograph TV and computer connections, label cables and keep them in marked bags. Remove batteries from remote controls and similar accessories where appropriate.

Protect televisions and screens

Use original packaging if available. Otherwise arrange suitable rigid and cushioned protection without pressing on the display. Flat screens are generally transported upright; check the manufacturer’s guidance. Do not rest heavy objects against them.

Computers and smaller electronics

Use a laptop bag or padded box for portable computers; you may prefer to keep them with you, especially where important data is involved. Pack smaller devices securely with cushioning so they cannot move.

Frequently asked questions

Should a television travel flat?

Generally keep flat screens upright and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

What if I do not have the original box?

Use suitable cushioning and rigid protection, ensuring no wrapping or other load presses on the screen.

Should I carry my computer myself?

That can be sensible, particularly for portable computers with important data. Back up the files first.
