Stretch wrap for moving furniture: uses and limits
Stretch wrap is useful for holding suitable loose parts together and keeping dust off some belongings. It provides little protection from impacts. Leather, fresh finishes, antique surfaces and longer storage need particular care because pressure or trapped moisture can damage them.
What the film actually does
The thin film clings to itself and can hold wrapping or parts in place without adhesive on the furniture. It is not a shock-absorbing layer: a wrapped corner can still be dented when it hits a wall or another load.
Appropriate short-term uses
Where suitable, use it to retain protective blankets, keep doors or drawers secured, bundle dismantled parts or protect fabric from dirt during handling. Do not wrap so tightly that soft material becomes marked.
Check the surface and storage period
Leather needs suitable breathable protection. Fresh paint, lacquer, veneer and antiques may be vulnerable to contact marks. Do not assume film is suitable for prolonged storage; trapped moisture can lead to discolouration or other damage.
Combine it with actual protection
Use appropriate blankets, cardboard or corner guards where cushioning and edge protection are needed, then retain that layer with a suitable method. Read the furniture-protection guide for the separate needs of furniture, glass and the carrying route.
Remove it without cutting the furniture
Work carefully and keep scissors or other tools clear of the item beneath. Remove temporary wrapping promptly when appropriate. Ask the company about suitable materials for valuable belongings and what its offer includes.
Frequently asked questions
Does stretch wrap protect against impacts?
Only very little. Use suitable cushioning and rigid protection where needed.
Is it suitable for a leather sofa?
Use a protection method suited to the leather and storage time. A suitable blanket may be more appropriate; avoid trapped moisture and prolonged contact.
How can I remove it safely?
Cut carefully with suitable blunt-ended scissors away from the underlying surface.
Will the moving company bring wrap?
Many bring wrapping materials, but confirm exactly what is included.
