Packing tape for moving boxes: secure the base correctly

Use strong wide packing tape suited to the box. On conventional flap boxes, an H pattern along the centre seam and across the edges reinforces the base. Correct tape cannot make damaged cardboard or an excessive load safe.

Choose tape for the task

Packing tape closes boxes. Masking tape may be useful for temporary labels on suitable surfaces, but still needs care. Strong cloth tape can leave residue and is not a good reason to attach adhesive directly to fine furniture.

Tape a conventional box

Fold the base flaps correctly, cover the centre seam and carry the tape a little up the sides. Add strips across the two edge seams. Check for gaps and weak points before filling, then close the lid appropriately when packed. Follow instructions for other box designs.

Avoid tape directly on furniture

Adhesive can mark wood, lacquer or upholstery or lift a finish. Secure suitable wrapping around furniture instead and tape the packaging, not the surface. Use labelled bags for screws and fittings and keep them together rather than taping an unprotected bag to a delicate finish.

Plan enough material without excessive layers

Quantity depends on box count, dimensions, roll length and reinforcement required. A dispenser can give even strips and reduce waste. Keep a spare rather than relying on an exact roll estimate, but do not wrap endless layers around an already unsuitable box.

Remove packaging carefully

Do not damage the underlying item with a blade. If residue remains, follow care instructions for the surface and test any cleaning method in a hidden place; do not assume water or solvent suits every finish.

Ask about packing materials

If the moving company is packing or securing many belongings, confirm its materials and responsibilities. Read the packing-service guide before comparing offers.

Frequently asked questions

How many rolls will I need?

It depends on roll length, box count and the required seams. Check supplies while packing and keep a margin.

Is an untaped folded base enough?

Follow the box’s design, but do not rely on an unsecured conventional flap base for heavy contents.

Can I tape drawers closed?

Avoid adhesive on vulnerable finishes. Agree an appropriate wrapping or securing method instead.

What should I do with furniture screws?

Put them in clearly labelled bags and keep them with the relevant parts or in a dedicated fittings box.
