Packing a kitchen for moving: order, food and essentials

Start with kitchen items you rarely use and leave everyday essentials until last. Wrap glass and china individually, use up food before the move and keep a small box for the first days.

Choose a practical packing order

Pack special-occasion crockery, baking equipment and seldom-used appliances first, followed by most pans, dishes and glasses. Leave daily essentials available. Empty and defrost refrigeration appliances in advance, following the appliance instructions.

Food, liquids and cleaning products

Plan meals to use chilled and frozen food. Seal dry goods so they cannot spill. Keep open liquids secure in an appropriate leak-resistant outer bag or avoid transporting them. Separate cleaning products from food and check what the mover can carry.

Set aside a first-days kitchen box

Keep a little crockery, cutlery, a pan, tea or coffee, tea towels, washing-up liquid and bin bags accessible. Wrap knives securely in suitable cardboard or protection and label the package; never leave sharp blades loose. Continue with packing clothes once the kitchen plan is clear.

Frequently asked questions

Can knives go loose in a box?

No. Protect and secure blades and clearly mark the package.

Can I pack cleaning products?
