Moving quote review checklist
Use these questions when reading a quote and before choosing a company. This is general guidance, not individual legal advice.
Twelve points to review
1. Fixed or hourly price
Is the price fixed or charged by the hour? When does chargeable time start and stop, and how is it rounded?
2. Included work
Are carrying, transport, packing and assembly included? What happens if the job is larger than described?
3. Moving crew
How many movers are included? Is that sufficient for large or heavy items?
4. Vehicle
What vehicle size is allowed for? Will more than one journey be needed?
5. Packing
Who packs? Are boxes and materials included?
6. Storage
Where, for how long and at what recurring price? How are stored items protected?
7. Cleaning
What cleaning is included? What happens if the landlord does not approve it?
8. Insurance
Which cover applies to your items? What about items you pack yourself?
9. Extra charges
Check stairs, carrying distance, weekends, travel, bridges and waiting time.
10. Cancellation
When can you cancel and at what cost? What happens if the date changes?
11. Payment
When is payment due and which methods are accepted?
12. Damage
How and by when must damage be reported? How is a claim handled?
Twelve areas to clarify
A longer quote is not automatically better. Check whether it describes your actual job and explains the terms clearly.
Frequently asked questions
Is the cheapest moving quote always best?
No. Quotes can cover different services and conditions. Compare the scope, terms and price together.
Should the agreement be written down?
A written quote and agreement help you and the company work from the same description.
Is this legal advice?
No. Seek appropriate advice if you need help with an individual agreement.
